Dangerous Mothers

At the Dangerous Women conference held by the Femina Girls, Rachel Jankovic spoke to mothers. The way I’ve summarized the notes might make it sound bossy and all “you, you, you,” but that wasn’t the tone at all — just the tone I used in writing it to myself. She was funny, but the humor didn’t make it into my notes much — is that telling? Oh dear. I do highly recommend the audio. Dangerous Woman as Mother Mothers Matter … Read More

Review: The Mother at Home by John S.C. Abbott – Simply Convivial

Review written in March of 2011 The Mother at Home by John S.C. Abbott was written in 1833. I have read it before, but it was something like 5-6 years ago — at the beginning of my motherhood journey. There were several times that I realized, “Oh, yes! This is where I got that!” Whether “that” be a quote or an idea or a sentiment. I had completely forgotten everything but the first few pages, which I think I had … Read More

Convivial Chronicles

I am afraid they might not have been joking about C-section recovery really, truly taking a full 4-6 weeks. Sigh. It just seems like I should be able to at least do the laundry and make dinner. My floors are atrocious, but we’ve managed to keep the clutter from accumulating on horizontal surfaces, so my sanity is somewhat preserved. Maybe after this enforced time off I’ll actually want to do the housework! One can always hope, anyway. Well, with all … Read More

Life continued mostly as usual before the baby was born, with our annual trip to the pumpkin patch: But then we brought home a new baby and were all very pleased with her. She sometimes seems less than pleased with us, though. However, we are all muddling along together, this week with the daily help from my mom, Nana. We went out with her on Tuesday. This is my first postpartum attempt at an outfit other than sweatpants. And possibly … Read More

A Providential C-Section

Geneva Kate was born November 2, 2012, by unexpected c-section, 24 hours after being admitted to the hospital for an induction at my request (her due date was October 28). Heidelberg Catechism | Lord’s Day 10 Q. What do you understand by the providence of God? A.
